Introduction
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is one of Nepal’s most exciting and remote Himalayan adventures. This long and rewarding journey takes more than three weeks of trekking through untouched wilderness in the far eastern Himalaya.
The trek leads to the base of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 m / 29,169 ft), the world’s third-highest mountain and Nepal’s second-highest peak. The mountain was first climbed on 25 May 1955 by a British expedition led by George Band and his team.
Kanchenjunga lies on the border between Nepal and India’s Sikkim state. Most trekking and mountaineering routes are accessed from the Nepal side due to easier logistics and trail access. The name Kanchenjunga comes from Tibetan origin, meaning “Five Treasures of Snow.”
The journey begins from Kathmandu with a scenic flight to southeastern Nepal, followed by travel through the famous tea garden hills of Ilam before reaching Suketar in Taplejung district — the main trekking starting point.
The trail first passes through traditional farming villages and dense forests before reaching Kanchenjunga South Base Camp areas such as Tseram and Oktang near the Yalung Glacier. After exploring the southern side, the route continues across high scenic passes to reach the North Base Camp at Pang Pema.
At Pang Pema (5,065 m), trekkers enjoy spectacular close-up views of the Kanchenjunga massif, including massive glaciers and dramatic icefalls — the ultimate highlight of this expedition.
After spending time at base camp, the return trek follows a different scenic route back to Suketar, followed by a drive and flight back to Kathmandu, completing one of Nepal’s most remote and unforgettable trekking experiences.
